What happened (brief summary)
During a four-person Zoom call, Alfred Albear noticed his friend L.C. move out of the camera frame and heard grunting followed by gurgling sounds, leading him to recognize that L.C. was having a seizure. Albear knew the building address but not the apartment number. He immediately called 911 and provided the building information while the other participants contacted friends to obtain the apartment number. Once they found it, Albear called 911 back with the additional information. He remained on Zoom until EMS arrived and was able to communicate with both L.C. and the EMTs, and later provided information to the hospital physicians.
Limitations / gaps
the virtual bystander may recognize the emergency but lack sufficient location information to direct EMS to the victim. In this case, participants improvised by contacting other friends to obtain the missing apartment number; there was no established mechanism for automatically obtaining or sharing the victim’s precise location with EMS.

What happened (brief summary)
A 39-year-old previously healthy female woke up feeling unusually fatigued one day. She was working from home that day by herself (nobody at home) and joined a Zoom call with a colleague. During the call, her speech became foggy, she felt that something was wrong, and she developed a sensation of heaviness in her chest. Her colleague suggested calling 911 to which she agreed.

Her colleague called 911 and remained on the Zoom call with her until EMS arrived approximately five minutes later. EMS transported her to the hospital, where she went into cardiac arrest shortly after arrival. She was subsequently diagnosed with STEMI due to an occlusion of the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery.
Limitations / gaps
Virtual bystander was able to activate the emergency system despite the victim being alone at home.

What happened (brief summary)
Chelsea Hunt was at home chatting with her friend on Facetime when something suddenly didn’t feel right. The left side of her body had lost sensation and was unresponsive. She was experiencing a stroke. Although her friend was out of the state and unable to intervene, Hunt’s 12-year-old son was home and called 911. Paramedics arrived and Hunt was quickly transported to the hospital where she received treatment within 30 minutes of her stroke symptom onset. She had no residual side effects from the stroke, was discharged from the hospital within a few days, and could return to work within three weeks.

What happened (brief summary)
During a video call, Rev. Curtis Dias developed pressure on the left side of his chest. He briefly stepped away, returned, and then asked to end the call. His younger brother, who was participating in the video call, immediately contacted him with another brother to check on him. When Dias decided to lie down, his brothers called 911. EMS arrived within minutes, and he was subsequently diagnosed with a STEMI caused by complete LAD occlusion and treated with angioplasty and two stents.

What happened (brief summary)
Marie Joseph, a 74-year-old nursing-home resident with a tracheostomy, FaceTimed her daughter, Norma Clotaire, because she could not breathe and staff were not responding to her call bell. Her daughter could see that she was struggling to breathe and that no staff were present. While remaining on FaceTime with her mother, Clotaire used her home phone to contact EMS. EMS arrived six minutes later and found Joseph in respiratory and cardiac arrest. A large mucus plug was subsequently found obstructing her tracheostomy tube. Joseph died two days later.
Limitations / gaps
The article examines the case primarily from a legal perspective concerning “virtual bystander” recovery, rather than emergency response. It does not provide detailed information about how the daughter activated EMS remotely, including whether she encountered difficulties reaching the appropriate EMS system or communicating her mother's location.

What happened (brief summary)
A 41-year-old asymptomatic previously healthy female resident of Houston, Texas, was on a Zoom video conference call with a work colleague in Australia when she collapsed out of view of her camera. After asking several times if she was alright, the patient's co-worker in Australia quickly looked up the patient's spouse's contact information and used an instant messaging system to ask if his wife was alright. The husband was able to check on his wife.
Limitations / gaps
The paper is a case report that highlights a case where the virtual bystander was able to intervene and help activate the chain of survival because they were able to reach a family member of the patient. It does not address the question of what happens when that direct link with a family member is not possible

What happened (brief summary)
During a Microsoft Teams call, a coworker recognized that a 47-year-old female collegue was experiencing a medical emergency after she developed a severe headache, blurred vision, became unable to speak, and became disoriented and fell off her chair and onto the floor. She was home alone. The coworker called 911 but did not know her address because she had recently moved. Because she could not speak, the coworker improvised a communication strategy by counting numbers and asking her to make a sound when the correct number was reached. Working with the 911 dispatcher, they used this method to identify her street number and street name, allowing EMS to locate her. The coworker remained connected and also instructed her to unlock the front door for EMS.
Limitations / gaps
This case demonstrates a key challenge of remotely witnessed emergencies: a virtual bystander may recognize an emergency and call 911 but may not know the victim’s exact location. In this case, the coworker and dispatcher successfully improvised a method to determine the address, but there was no established protocol or technological mechanism to automatically identify or share the victim’s location with emergency services.

What happened (brief summary)
Walters Tillery, 61, was familiar with the acronym FAST, which teaches that if you see someone with facial drooping, arm weakness or speech difficulties, it's time to call 911. She was now witnessing her own stroke and knew that time equals brain tissue.

The video call ended and Walters Tillery grabbed her cellphone and stood up, but fell to the floor as her entire left side was already paralyzed. Only five minutes had passed since recognizing the first signs of stroke. Luckily, she had her phone in her hand and called 911. Realizing her heart was racing, she tapped into her 12 years of yoga practice and started deep, yogic breathing to calm her body.

At age 45, Simon Henley, a Medtronic employee, suddenly collapsed from cardiac arrest while participating in a work video conference. His wife, Martha, heard him fall and found him unconscious. When she realized the video call was still active, she put on his earbuds and communicated with his coworkers. His coworkers had already called 911 and instructed Martha to begin CPR. What happened (brief summary)
The author reports personally experiencing situations in which a telemedicine consultation with a patient at home had to be aborted because of the severity of the patient’s illness. In these cases, the remote provider had to communicate the urgency of reaching a hospital, call an ambulance, and update emergency services to close the loop and facilitate emergency care. The author expresses that unlike remote consultations involving patients already in an ICU, patients at home do not have an on-site clinical team capable of immediate resuscitation, making clear and rapid communication critical.
Limitations / gaps
Although the author reports personal experience with emergencies occurring during telemedicine consultations with patients at home, the article does not provide detailed descriptions of these events, including the types of emergencies, how they were recognized remotely, or how the emergency response was activated and coordinated.

What happened (brief summary)
John Davis, 55, experienced a sudden medical episode on camera while livestreaming on Facebook with his mother. During a Facebook Live cooking broadcast with his mother, John Davis reportedly said that he was not feeling well and then collapsed on camera. Emergency services were called to his home in Jellico, Tennessee, for a male who had stopped breathing, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. A social-media account described the event as a heart attack; however, an official cause of death had not been released in subsequent news reporting. Davis had a documented history of heart failure and other chronic medical conditions.
Limitations / gaps
The acute event was described as a heart attack on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/3151156608394157/posts/3504727903037024/) but was not confirmed as such in the news report.
